Book review on the summerlands
The book the summer lands I'd a book written by micheal Chabon, I hav not read any of his other books but I very much intend to now. The book the summer lands has lots of characters, so there are (in my opinion) four main characters. Those characters are Ethan feld, Ethan felds dad, Thor, and Jennifer T. Thor is a human, and part ferisher, which is a little hard to explain but a ferisher is kind of like a fairy with no wings, mixed with an American Indian tribe. Ethan and mr. Feld are just normal humans, and Jennifer t. Is a human mixed with something called a shadowtail, which is a creature with some....spiecal abilities. The book tacked place in the tree of life, it's literally a tree. There are three parts to the tree, the summerlands, the winterlands, and the middling. The middling is where we live now, and the other two aren't that hard to figure out (shadowtails are able to jump from branch to branch of the tree) if you like baseball this is the perfect book for you. In this book baseball is almost holy, in a way. All the creatures and characters in the book have something to do with baseball. The plot is the four characters I mentioned earlier find out that the coyote is trying to destroy the tree of life, and create a new one, were he rules everything. The coyote is all of those tricksters from the old miths, like Loki, or Satan. So Ethan and Jennifer T. get scouted out (like in baseball) to become heroes by a professional hero scout, mr.brown. They travel into the summer lands and need to find a way to stop coyote. They go around trying to find coyote through all three of the worlds and somewhere along the way pick up some characters and form a baseball team. I won't spoil any more of this book, but it's allot better than I described it. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story about old myths.

I LOVED Summerland ad I recommended it a bunch when it came out, and then of course all these books have been written in the last few years that feature gods and heroes from myths - but I liked the fact that it includes so many different mythologies and folk tale traditions.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that Baseball is a religion (almost) on Clam Island. Ethan Feld is such a terrific character - I have to say that I would probably been a worse baseball player than Ethan, bu I love the game, too - and I would hope to get scouted for the Big Team on love of the game alone.
I have tried to read some of Chabon's other books (The Yiddish Policeman's Union) for example, and this one is still my favorite.
In my dreams I play as well as Jennifer T.
